Answers to common questions regarding the existence of this website
Consider this:
Only 47 decimal digits
of pi would be sufficient to inscribe a circle around the visible universe that doesn't deviate from
perfect circularity by more than the distance across a single proton. (i.e. far less than one
hundred digits of pi are all that is necessary for practical mathematic computation. There is little
need for the evaluation of pi past this point, and certainly none that require over 50 billion
digits!)
Since the latter assertion holds similar truth for most all other popular mathematic constants this
poses several key questions: Why would anyone calculate millions of digits of any irrational number?
Furthermore, why would any one individual spend coutless time memorizing these numbers? And most
importantly, why create a website dedicated to these absurdly verbose numbers?
The answer is simple and quite universal, it is what we as humans do. We strive to reach the
asymptotic limits, even in the face of seeming absurdity.
